Research Applications

  1. GABAergic and Behavioral-Model Research (Selank)

Selank is studied as a positive allosteric modulator of the GABAergic system. Research published in PMC has examined its activity in rodent stress models in comparison with classical benzodiazepine reference compounds [1], and a separate study examined how Selank is associated with the expression of genes involved in GABAergic neurotransmission [2]. These studies support allosteric modulation of the GABAergic system as a proposed molecular mechanism examined in laboratory models [1], [2].

  1. Immunomodulation and Monoamine Research (Selank)

As a tuftsin analogue, Selank has been examined for modulation of interleukin-6 expression and T helper cell cytokine balance, for association with monoamine neurotransmitter concentrations and serotonin metabolism, and for association with hippocampal BDNF expression in rats [1], [2]. These properties make Selank a research tool spanning GABAergic, immunomodulatory, and neurochemical investigation.

  1. Neurotrophic Factor Research (Semax)

Semax is among the most extensively studied Russian-developed regulatory peptides. Literature has examined changes in BDNF levels and gene expression and TrkB-related signaling in association with Semax [3], and characterized it as an ACTH(4-10) analogue with nootropic-class activity [3]. Additional studies have examined its binding to neural tissue, making it a tool compound in neuroplasticity-pathway research [4].

  1. Neuroprotection-Model Research (Semax)

Semax has been used in preclinical cerebral ischemia and oxidative-stress models as a research tool. Gene expression studies have examined how Semax is associated with the expression of genes related to neural and vascular function in rat brain [4]. This provides a molecular basis for the neuroprotection research framing applied to the compound [3], [4].

  1. Delivery and Stability Research

Because this formulation is supplied as a spray, it is of interest in research on peptide delivery and handling characteristics. This blend provides a model system for investigating peptide stability and recovery in solution and the comparative behavior of the two components under controlled laboratory conditions [1], [3].

Summary

This formulation combines two synthetic heptapeptides developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, supplied here in a spray format. Selank (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) is an analogue of the immunomodulatory peptide tuftsin, studied as a positive allosteric modulator of the GABAergic system with additional serotonergic and immunomodulatory activity. Semax (Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro) is an analogue of the adrenocorticotropic hormone ACTH(4-7) fragment, studied for its association with the neurotrophins brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF). Each peptide carries a C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro motif that confers resistance to enzymatic degradation. The two are frequently studied together because they share a structural design strategy and a central nervous system research field while engaging pharmacologically distinct mechanisms. This product is for laboratory research use only and is not for human consumption.
