Selank: the tuftsin-derived heptapeptide explained
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide built on tuftsin, a short peptide found naturally in the body. This guide covers its structure and the main themes of the published laboratory research.
From tuftsin to Selank
Tuftsin (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg) is a tetrapeptide fragment of the Fc domain of the immunoglobulin G heavy chain. Short peptides like tuftsin are broken down quickly by peptidases. Selank adds a Pro-Gly-Pro sequence to the C-terminus, a motif associated with greater resistance to enzymatic breakdown. Selank was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Chemistry
- Sequence: Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro (TKPRPGP)
- Molecular formula: C33H57N11O9
- Molecular weight: about 751.9 g/mol
- CAS: 129954-34-3
Main themes in the literature
- GABA-A receptor binding. Rodent and in vitro studies have examined Selank as an allosteric modulator of ligand binding at GABA-A receptors.
- Gene expression. Several papers report changes in expression of genes linked to GABAergic neurotransmission in rodent brain tissue.
- Behavioral models. Selank has been studied in rodent stress and behavioral paradigms, often compared with reference compounds.
- Immunomodulation. Given its tuftsin origin, some studies look at cytokine expression in cell and animal models.
Related peptide
Selank is often discussed with Semax, another Pro-Gly-Pro-extended peptide from the same institute. See Adamax and Semax.
Verifying a lot
With seven residues and three prolines, Selank gives a clear mass spectrometry signal near 752 Da. Check that and the HPLC purity on the certificate of analysis for your lot.
