Glutathione (GSH) is an endogenous γ-glutamyl-cysteinyl-glycine tripeptide supplied as a research-grade standard. It is central to models of redox homeostasis, detoxification, antioxidant defense, and thiol-based signaling.
Glutathione is the predominant low-molecular-weight thiol in mammalian cells and a key determinant of cellular redox status.[1] It participates in detoxification of reactive oxygen species and electrophiles, conjugation of xenobiotics, and regulation of protein thiol oxidation.[2] Exogenous GSH in defined systems is used to interrogate redox buffering, enzyme kinetics, and oxidative stress mechanisms.
The γ-glutamyl linkage and cysteinyl thiol define GSH’s reactivity and its ability to form oxidized glutathione (GSSG).[1] Manipulation of the GSH:GSSG ratio in vitro enables quantification of redox-sensitive pathway responses.
